The Pagoria Family Tree

Our History

All Pagorias throughout the world originated in Caccamo, Italy (about 30 miles east of Palermo, Italy on the island of Sicily - click on the Caccamo link to access pictures, maps, and information on Caccamo and history of the island of Sicily). All eight of the original U.S. Pagorias have been confirmed as having been born in Caccamo.

There are three families that appear to be the common bond between all of the Pagorias in the United States. All Pagorias contacted in the United States are descended from these three families.

The First family (Father: Giovanni and Mother: Giovanna Guzzo) consists of four brothers that came to the United States. There is at least one sister that stayed in Italy in this family. The four brothers first settled in Louisiana, before moving to Chicago Heights, Illinois where their families were raised.

The Second family includes Nick Pagoria (Father: Giuseppe and Mother: Maria Badame). It has now been proven that Nick and the four brothers of the First Family were first cousins. There is no record of Nick's brother or sisters coming to the United States. Nick was the original Pagoria in the Chicago Heights, Illinois area. He encouraged the brothers in the first family to move to Chicago Heights. He gave at least one brother (Dominick) a loan so he could buy his first house.

The Third family includes Giuseppe, Carmella, and Vincent (Father: Nicasio and Mother: Giovanna (Genieve) Monastero). The Third Family arrived in the U.S. (through Ellis Island) a few years later than the first two families and appears to have had very little contact with the first two families. Giuseppe, Carmella, and Vincent are second cousins of the first two families.

Debora Hill has completed her research on the Pagoria Family Tree. Deb has constructed the Tree from around 1730 to the early 1900s. This information is available at the following link. The ancestors have been found (from the records that Deb has researched) for all three Families. This information is official and documented.

The First Family

Giovanni Pagoria (Father of the First Family) was born March 28, 1824 in Caccamo and died January 23, 1896. He married Giovanna Guzzo on October 16, 1859. Giovanna was born September 22, 1832 in Caccamo to Domenico Guzzo and Santa Prinzi, who were married April 8, 1812. Giovanni and Giovanna had five sons and three daughters:

Filippo (Philip) born August 11, 1860 in Caccamo
Domenico (Dominick) born April 2, 1862 in Caccamo
Giuseppe born February 27, 1864 in Caccamo (must have died as an infant)
Giuseppina born February 26, 1866 in Caccamo
Serafina born in June 1868, died January 17, 1869 in Caccamo
Santa (female name) born December 7, 1869, died December 22, 1869 in Caccamo
Giuseppe (Joe) born September 29, 1871 in Caccamo
Pietro (Peter) born July 2, 1873 in Caccamo

The Second Family

Giuseppe Pagoria (born January 25, 1822) married Maria Badame (born around 1839 - parents, Nicasio Badame and Santa Fusei) on December 6, 1857 in Caccamo, Italy. They had six children:

Filippo Pagoria (born September 25, 1858 in Caccamo)
Liboria Pagoria (born October 15, 1860 in Caccamo)
Nicasio Pagoria (born March 8, 1862 in Caccamo). Father of the Second Family
Giuseppa Pagoria (born October 2, 1864 in Caccamo)
Santa Pagoria (born in 1867 in Caccamo)
Giorgio Pagoria (born April 17, 1869 in Caccamo)

The Third Family

Nicasio Pagoria (born November 26, 1842) married Giovanna (Genieve) Monastero (born around 1853, parents, Giuseppe Monastero and Carmela Barbaccia) on February 13, 1869 in Caccamo. They had six children:

Vincenzo born in March 1872 in Caccamo
Giuseppe born August 1, 1875 in Caccamo
Salvatore born February 22, 1881 in Caccamo
Carmella born December 27, 1884 in Caccamo
Vincenza born March 27, 1889 in Caccamo

The Research (last update: August 24, 2008)

The attached family tree has been constructed based on research by Angie Garrison (Wisconsin), Gwen Pagoria (Kentucky), Mike Pagoria (Florida), Salvatore Pagoria (Palermo, Italy), and about 20 other descendants throughout the U.S. that responded to a mail inquiry generated by Mike Pagoria. Salvatore's research has led to the confirmation of the first set of brothers and the dates of their births in Caccamo. Angie's research was completed in Caccamo in the 1980s. If anyone is curious where Angie, Gwen and I fit in the family tree, our names are in bold in Dominick's tree (Mike), Nick's tree (Gwen), and Peter's tree (Angie).

Further research (sponsored by Pete Biamonte (his name is in bold in Philip Pagoria's branch)) was completed by Debora Hill in New York. The LDS records have been traced for all Pagorias from Caccamo from approximately 1820 to 1910. Additional research and contacts in Italy have resulted in the finding of Giovanni's ten siblings and information linking all three families. The results of the research are posted at the following link (Pagoria old timers).

Phil and Donna Pagoria (Dominick's line) sent quite a few pictures (some of which are posted on the site) and two tapes from interviews that Phil and Donna held with Dominick's children. The tapes include some excellent information on how the families lived after coming to the U.S., some great stories, and some information for the family tree. Phil's and Donna's names are in bold in Dominick's section of the tree.

The information included in this document is not official. The information is accurate to the best of our knowledge, but most of the sources of the information are not officially documented.

Two Pagoria crests have been obtained by Salvatore in Palermo. They both state that Pagoria probably originated from the name Pagano. This would mean that the original Pagorias were pagans (non-Christian). The crests are in no way official and I personally have my doubts about their authenticity. The link to Pagano is very doubtful (based on the research being conducted by Deb Hill). The crests were obtained from a street vendor selling the crests (as printed) from his computer database in Palermo. I have created a Pagoria Coat of Arms that is available at the following link. Please check it out and let me know what you think.

Roberto Pagoria (Rome, Italy - Salvatore's son) has stated that there are only about 14 families of Pagorias in all of Italy. If this is true, there are probably more Pagorias in the U.S. than in Italy. I would estimate the entire world population of Pagorias at less than 300 (I am only considering Pagorias that have retained their last name).

The name Paoria has surfaced as a branch to the Pagoria Family Tree. Lisa Locascio is a Paoria descendant and believes that her ancestors were Pagorias that dropped the "g" in their name. If you want to contact Lisa, you can do so through her web site at http://strzoda.8m.com./homepage.htm. Deb Hill's research has determined that the Paoria branch settled in Alia and does branch from the Pagorias in Caccamo. The Paoria branch of the Tree is available at the following link (click here). The current research has uncovered Sicilian documents that have the Pagoria name spelled "Pagoria" and "Paoria" in the same document.

Over 120 pictures have been added to the website. The first set of pictures of Caccamo can be accessed by clicking on the words "Caccamo, Italy" above. There are 21 additional sets of pictures in Dominick's, Giuseppina's, Peter's, Philip's, Vincent's, Joe's, and Nick's line. The pictures are accessible by clicking on the hyperlinks in each of the family trees. I will continue to add pictures of Pagoria descendants in the future. In most cases, the same pictures are available at much higher resolutions (e.g., if you want to print the picture). Please contact me if you are interested in higher resolution pictures. The Pagoria Family Tree has been setup in a collapsible format. Clicking on an ancestor's entry on the page will display that ancestor's children (and visa versa if the children are already displayed). Clicking on the child will, in turn, pull down the child's children, etc. This will only work in newer browsers (Internet Explorer 4+). Older browsers will show all ancestors without the collapsing feature.

Isodoro Pagoria (born around 1730) married Domenica (Giovanna) and they had one child:

Filippo Pagoria (born around 1752 and died in 1828). He married Angela Pieroraro. Their first child was:

Dominick (born in Caccamo on April 2, 1862, died February 26, 1943 in Chicago Heights, Illinois) arrived at the Port of New Orleans on September 22, 1892, and married Georgia Sclafani (Scalfano) (born April 22, 1873 in Caccamo, died October 25, 1940 in Chicago Heights, Illinois) on July 11, 1897 in Donaldsville, LA. Georgia was the daughter of Filippo Scalfano and Agatha (Ida) Catalano. Georgia had a brother (Biaggio) and three sisters (Josephine, Maria, and Francesca). The known history of the Scalfano family is documented at this hyperlink. Dominick and Georgia had five sons and five daughters:

Two daughters were born in Louisiana and died as toddlers. They were born before John. Their names were Jenny and Ida.
John, born April 6, 1902 in Donaldsville, LA. John married Rosalie Boggiano (born February 9, 1906 in Chicago, Illinois) on February 10, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. They had two children:
- Lois Georgia (born January 18, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois). She married Robert Coxworth (born 1925, died 1989) on July 28, 1951 in Harvey, Illinois. They had five children. Lois married Jack Gallagher on February 4, 1999:
  - Robert John (born in 1953). He married Karen Bohlmeyer in 1980 (divorced in 1996). Robert married Deborah Lynn Rogers on October 9, 1999. Robert and Karen had two children:

  - James Llewellyn (born in 1954). He married Andrea Billhardt in 1976 (divorced in June, 2000). They had three children:

Philip, born May 15, 1904, in Donaldsville, LA, died September 9, 1991 in Chicago Heights, IL. Phil married Emma Cincione (born April 7, 1908, died September 5, 1971 in Chicago Heights, IL - parents, Frank Cincione and Elizabeth Santostefano). The known history of the Cincione family is documented at this hyperlink. Phil married Jennie DeBello (born February 15, 1913 and died March 25, 1993) on June 30, 1973 in Richton Park, IL. Phil and Emma had two children:

Peter Pagoria was born July 2, 1873 and died October 19, 1953. He married Margherita (Margaret) Bova on April 29, 1909 in Caccamo and they moved to Chicago Heights, Illinois in June, 1909. Margherita was born August 30, 1888 in Caccamo to Ignazio Bova and Filippa Stanfa, who were married October 11, 1889. Margherita (Margaret) died March 18, 1966. They had nine children:

John J. Pagoria (born September 5, 1910 and died January 19, 1994). He married Bernice Telkes (born January 24, 1910, died January 31, 2001). They had one child:
- Nancy Ann Pagoria (born September 11, 1945).
Jennie Pagoria (born November 11, 1911, died November 2, 2003). She married Nick Stanfa (born August 19, 1906 and died July 26, 1969) and had ten children:
- Joseph (born in 1932)
- Gloria Jean (born January 11, 1939 in Chicago Heights, IL). She married Alfred Bitz (born April 29, 1935 in Strauberg, North Dakota) on May 14, 1960 in Chicago Heights, Illinois. They have four children:
  - Dan Bitz (born May 5, 1961 in Chicago Heights, Illinois) married Laurie Ellis (born in March, 1960) on January 19, 1985. Dan and Laurie divorced in December, 1994. Dan married Julie Miller (born on September 14th) on September 28, 1995. Dan and Laurie had one child:
    - Elizabeth Bitz (born September 16, 1990 in Chicago, Illinois.
  - Kathy Lynn Bitz (born June 19, 1962 in Chicago Heights, Illinois) married Tim Reddicks (born September 8, 1954) on April 28. They divorced in 1989. They had two children:
    - Jessica Reddicks (born September 8, 1984 in Charleston, Illinois)
    - Andy Reddicks (born March 6, 1987 in Charleston, Illinois)
  - Susan Mary Bitz (born September 5, 1963) married Richard Alan Sidlowski (born April 11, 1963) in Steger, Illinois on June 18, 1988. They have four children:

Dominick Pagoria (born September 10, 1915, died November 9, 1996 in Gulfport, Mississippi). He married Marie Kelly (died December 29, 2002 in Gulfport, Mississippi) and had six children.
